Plenty of eyebrows were raised last summer when Girona completed the signing of ex-Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Ajax defender Daley Blind, but it’s turned out to be a very shrewd piece of business from the Catalans.

Blind has been an undisputed starter for Michel Sanchez this season, and he’s played a significant role in Girona securing Champions League qualification, which was achieved earlier this month. As a result, the 34-year-old has been awarded with a one-year contract extension, which was announced on Wednesday.

Blind signed an initial contract keeping him at the Catalan side until the summer of 2025, but his stay is now set until 2026. His experience will be invaluable for his Girona teammates ahead of the club’s inaugural Champions League campaign next season.

It promises to be a very busy summer for Girona, and it’s been a good start with the renewal of Blind. There should be plenty of further activity taking place over the coming weeks and months.
