New Jersey Devils Star Forward Opts for Offseason Surgery
Dennis Schneidler-USA TODAY Sports

The New Jersey Devils announced on Tuesday that star forward Timo Meier is scheduled to undergo elective arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder.

The surgery will take place on April 23rd and be performed by Devils’ Chief Medical Officer Dr. Jonathan L. Glashow and Team Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Guillem Gonzalez-Lomas.

The Devils’ power forward is expected to make a full recovery and will be available for the beginning of New Jersey’s 2024 training camp ahead of the 2024-25 season.

Add Meier’s shoulder injury to several injuries that the star forward dealt with in his first full season with the Devils. When the Devils cleaned out their lockers after the regular season, Timo Meier revealed he was dealing with a plethora of injuries this season.

“Just earlier in the year, both MCLs and then after that just an oblique injury, so nothing too crazy,” Meier explained last week.

The forward’s shoulder was not part of his injury assessment that he reluctantly shared.

The news on Meier comes one day after New Jersey Hockey Now learned that Jesper Bratt turned down Sweden’s invitation to play at the IIHF World Championships. Bratt was advised it would be in his best interest to sit out of the tournament following post-season medicals.

Bratt’s injury isn’t expected to be long-term.

Unlike Bratt, Meier joins Jack Hughes as one of the Devils’ stars who underwent surgery in the offseason.

Devils star defenseman, Dougie Hamilton, had mid-season pectoral surgery and explained he certainly might have joined the team in the first round of the playoffs had New Jersey reached the postseason.

Regardless, all of the Devils’ stars will have a long offseason to recover and return to New Jersey in September for training camp 100% healthy.

New Jersey signed Meier to an eight-year, $70.4 million extension last summer.
