Legendary Patriots coach reveals why he won't watch 'The Dynasty'

Legendary offensive line coach and assistant head coach Dante Scarnecchia earned five Super Bowl rings as part of staffs assembled by former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

During a recent appearance on SiriusXM NFL Radio, Scarnecchia explained why he won't be watching Apple TV's "The Dynasty" docuseries that's become polarizing and even somewhat controversial among fans and former Patriots players.

"I get it," Scarnecchia said, as shared by Patriots beat writer Chris Mason of MassLive. "Bill is unbelievable. The greatest head coach that there has ever been. And we’ve had a lot of great players. But I also think the guys that really started the whole thing, I was aghast that they were not interviewed for this thing... There is some selective journalism here and I don’t like it."

Noteworthy former Patriots players such as Rob Gronkowski, Devin McCourty, Rodney Harrison, Julian Edelman and Matthew Slater have offered criticisms of "The Dynasty" due to perceived negative portrayals of Belichick.

Similar to those club icons, Patriots owner Robert Kraft said during the owners meetings this week he was disappointed those responsible for the series didn't embrace "more of a real positive approach."

Scarnecchia voiced a different complaint. He made it known he was annoyed that former offensive coordinator Charlie Weis, former defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel and former special teams coordinator Brad Seely failed to receive deserved praise for their contributions regarding the start of the Patriots dynasty that officially began in February 2002.

"Those three guys came there and, in the first year, implemented systems on offense, defense and special teams that essentially transcended the next 20 years," Scarnecchia said. "And not one of them was interviewed, and I said, 'How can this possibly be?'"

It was previously reported that Belichick's camp was shopping a book this spring that was "more of the business variety." However, sports media insider Andrew Marchand of The Athletic indicated on Friday that "the nature of the book is not yet fully known."

Marchand also teased that Belichick's project could either be an answer to "The Dynasty" or simply be about "[Belichick's] views on leadership or a topic in that genre."

Whatever Belichick chooses to write about and/or already has put on paper, it seems individuals such as Scarnecchia would be interested in some sort of "Dynasty" follow-up from the man who guided the Patriots to six Super Bowl championships during his 24-season tenure.
