Bobby Wagner’s Recent Comments Will Upset Seahawks Fans

In defense of the Seahawks, their salary cap situation is pretty awful right now, as they are currently over the cap. Plus, with Seattle likely headed toward a rebuild sooner rather than later, it may not have thought it would be wise to spend money on an aging player.

That being said, it’s not like Wagner received a king’s ransom from the Commanders. They signed him to a one-year, $6.5 million deal, and you have to think Wagner would have preferred to remain with the Seahawks.

The 33-year-old, who played his collegiate football at Utah State, was selected by Seattle in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft.

Wagner spent the first decade of his career with the Seahawks, making eight straight trips to the Pro Bowl between 2014 and 2021. He also earned six First-Team All-Pro selections during that span, leading the league in tackles twice throughout the run. Most importantly, he helped Seattle win a Super Bowl during the 2013-14 campaign.

The Los Angeles native then joined the Los Angeles Rams in free agency in April 2022. In his lone season with the Rams, Wagner rattled off 140 tackles, six sacks, a couple of interceptions and five passes defended. Los Angeles released him that ensuing offseason, and he signed back with the Seahawks.

Part of the problem for Wagner is that NFL teams no longer place a great deal of importance on inside linebackers, instead choosing to focus on edge rushers, defensive tackles and cornerbacks. As a result, players of his ilk have become more expendable.

Maybe one day, Bobby Wagner and the Seahawks will patch things up, but for now, he seems to not be on the best of terms with Seattle’s organization.
